Make an easy Gluten-Free Apple Cobbler with pantry-style ingredients and Granny Smith apples!

Make a delicious gluten-free apple cobbler with simple ingredients that you can find right in your pantry! This apple crisp combines granny smith apples with brown sugar and is topped with a golden brown biscuit topping.

What is the best apple for apple cobbler?

There are a variety of apple options for an apple cobbler these include Granny Smith Apples, Gala Apples, and Honeycrisp Apples. These are the varieties that we use most often. The combination of both can also be used for a cobbler giving it a sweet and tart flavor.

How do you make Gluten-Free Apple Cobbler?

The only swap needed to make this gluten-free is a gluten-free all-purpose flour. This needs to be a 1:1 ratio interchangeable with regular flour.

I use either King Arthur Gluten-Free Flour, Better Batter, Bob’s Red Mill, or Cup 4 Cup. I have had the best luck baking with these flours.

Once you have the flour ready, it’s time to get started.

The first thing to do will be to combine the sugar and cinnamon to make a cinnamon sugar topping for the apples. The apples can be sliced thinly or in larger chunks, this is up to your preference. We also typically peel the apples first as well, again that’s up to you.

The fresh apples will be peeled and sliced, then tossed in the cinnamon, sugar, and flour mixture.

Once this is done, it’s time to pour those sliced apples into a baking dish. I like to use an 8×6 baking dish for this but you can use a 9×13 as well or an 8-inch round pan.

After the apples are prepared, it’s time to make the biscuit topping. This is going to be a combination of ingredients. The best way to make this is by using a pastry cutter or pastry blender to cream together the cold butter with the dry ingredients into a pea-like consistency using a large mixing bowl.

Once you have this done, you will mix in the wet ingredients.

The consistency will be a thick batter that is spreadable and slowly pourable.

The batter will be spread on top of the prepared apples. It is okay if it does not cover the entire dish, there will likely be spots that it does not cover fully, the batter will spread as it bakes so this is okay.

Once prepared, the dish will bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour in the oven.

It can be served warm with a scoop of ice cream and additional cinnamon or nutmeg. We also like to add a drizzle of caramel sauce too.

Remember that this batter is a biscuit or bread consistency, if you prefer more of a crisp with gluten-free oats, try this Gluten Free Apple Crisp.

How do you store leftover apple cobbler?

Store the leftover cobbler in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When ready to serve, reheat the cobbler on a microwave-safe dish for 1-2 minutes, then serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Remember that the cobbler is best served fresh when the cobbler topping is warm out of the oven.

Steps

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, add the apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and flour. Mix well until the apples are fully coated.

  3. 3

Coat a baking dish either 8x6, 9x13, or 8-inch round dish, with nonstick baking spray and pour the apples into the dish. They can be layered on top of each other to fit.

  4. 4

In another bowl, use a pastry cutter to cream together butter, sugar, baking powder, and flour. This will be a small pea-like consistency.

  5. 5

Mix in salt, egg, and milk to make a batter. It will be thick but spreadable.

  6. 6

Using a spoon, lightly spread the batter on top of the apples, it's okay if it does not evenly cover the entire thing. It will rise and expand throughout baking time.

  7. 7

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until golden brown on top.

  8. 8

Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
