Heart Shaped Eggs in a Basket

Heart Shaped Eggs in a Basket are an all time favorite for Valentine’s Day Breakfast!

As we head closer to Valentine’s Day, I love to make a variety of festive foods for my family. One of the ones we love during this time of year are these Heart Shaped Eggs that I bake in the oven.

Along with those, I love to make Eggs in a Basket with toast, but this time I thought I would make these Heart Shaped Eggs in a Basket as an alternative to the baked eggs that I typically make.

My entire family LOVES these. My daughter went through two pieces and she’s usually only able to make it through one piece of toast.

How do you make Heart Shaped Eggs in a Basket?

I was pretty excited that she loved them so much because she’s hard to get good protein sources in, so knowing she loves eggs, these were perfect for her.

Now, typically when I make these, I simply do them completely in the skillet. The problem is that when you flip them you tend to lose the shape when you are cutting them out.

Tips for making Heart Shaped Eggs in a Basket

So, the best option that I have found to avoid losing the shape is to cook them first in the skillet, then instead of flipping them place them in the oven under the broiler for just a few minutes until they are nice and toasty.

I do this by cooking them in my cast iron skillet, that way I can just place the entire skillet in the oven. I have a large enough skillet so that I can make 2-4 at a time. I also like to toast the cut out too because it’s delicious too.

On mornings where we are going to school too, these are so simple that I can quickly make them for the family before heading out the door. I also like to make myself some with gluten-free bread.

Have you tried these before? This is a classic recipe that we have been using for a long time and well loved around our home!

Ingredients

4 Slices

Steps

  1. 1

Spray a cast iron skillet with nonstick cooking spray, and warm up on medium-high heat.

  2. 2

While the skillet is warming, butter both sides of the toast, then cut out the shape you would like, in this case a heart with a cookie cutter.

  3. 3

Place the toast in the warmed skillet and let it cook for about 1-2 minutes on one side, then flip the toast. At this point, you could add as many slices of bread as you can fit in the skillet.

  4. 4

Place a cracked egg in the center of each piece and let it cook until nearly done on the bottom and bubbly.

  5. 5

At this point when the egg is nearly cooked, place the entire skillet carefully into the oven and turn it on low broil.

  6. 6

Let it broil for about 2-4 minutes watching carefully so it does not burn.

  7. 7

Once it is done, carefully remove the skillet and place back on medium-high heat, removing the cooked eggs in a basket to a plate.

  8. 8

Spray the skillet again if needed with the cooking spray, place the center cut out pieces of the bread on the skillet and lightly toast on each side.
