How do you make Gluten-Free Fried Fish and Chips?

When making gluten-free fish and chips, the potatoes will be fried first, then the fish will be added to the oil and fried with an increased temperature. Once the fish is fried, the potatoes will be added to the oil for a second time to deep fry and make them extra crispy. This recipe does include multiple steps; be sure to read the recipe card below for full instructions.

Using a shallow bowl, prepare the fish batter ingredients and blend them using the recipe instructions in the recipe card below. Each fish fillet will be placed in the flour mixture and then immediately dip in the batter, letting any excess drip off. Once the fish is fully coated, immediately add it to the hot oil and fry at 370 degrees F. This process will continue for all remaining fish.

Steps to Make Gluten-Free Fish and Chips:

  1. Place the potatoes in a bowl of ice water for 20-30 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep, heavy skillet or deep fryer to 330 degrees F.
  3. Drain the potatoes and dry them with a kitchen towel.
  4. Carefully, fry the potatoes for about 1 cup at a time in the hot oil for about 2 minutes.
  5. Remove with a slotted strainer and drain over paper towels.
  6. Repeat for all potatoes.
  7. Increase the oil to a temperature of 370 degrees F.
  8. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  9. Next, add in the beer or milk; if you are making this gluten-free, be sure the beer is gluten-free.
  10. Add a little more flour to the fish fillets and toss to coat.
  11. Add the floured fillets to the batter and let the excess batter drip off.
  12. Carefully add the fish to the oil at 370 degrees F.

How do you make Homemade Fries or Chips?

The french fries will be sliced and prepped using russet potatoes. These will need to be soaked in a bowl of ice water for about 30 minutes before frying. The cold water will prepare them to be fried. They will first be fried in lower heat, then removed from the hot oil and fried again once the fish is complete.

This recipe will be done in batches as each fish fillet and the chips will need to be fried in the hot oil. This oil will be used multiple times, and it’s important to keep a close eye on the temperature so that the fish and chips are fried evenly.

Tips for Making Gluten-Free Fish and Chips:

  • Pat the Fish and Chips Dry – Each time you coat the fish and chips, be sure to pat them dry. This helps the coating fully stick to the fish and chips.
  • Be sure to use a Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour – This will already have the Xanthan Gum in the flour, which will give it a better texture.
  • Do NOT overcrowd the pot of oil. Be sure to work in batches a few fish fillets at a time, keeping a close eye on the temperature of the cooking oil.
  • Let the excess oil cool before disposal.

What should you pair Fish and Chips with?

If you want to add hush puppies, make the batter and just toss them in the oil after the fries are done, and they will quickly be fried and ready to add to the meal.

How do you store leftover fish and chips?

Once fully cooled, store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

When ready to reheat, heat in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes or microwave for 1-2 minutes.

This homemade gluten-free fish and chips recipe gives you that classic, deep-fried crunch without the gluten. It’s perfect for Lent, an easy weeknight dinner, or whenever you’re craving pub-style comfort food that’s gluten-free!
