Freezer Meal Basic Tips:

  • Use freezer storage bags or meal prep containers that will freeze well under super cold temperatures.
  • Label all freezer foods with the name and date, plus any prep instructions.
  • Cool foods completely before freezing.
  • Remove as much air as possible in the freezer-safe storage bags.
  • Use these Freezer Bag Holders for easy prep.
  • Freeze liquids or soups flat to utilize storage space and reduce defrost time.
  • Flash Freezing Tip – Use a baking sheet and individually freeze items, for example beef chimichangas, once frozen, wrap the chimichanga and then place them in a freezer safe bag so they do not stick together.
  • Each of the recipes that I have on this list below, freeze wonderfully, follow the description on thawing and preparing.

How do you reheat freezer meals?

  • Slow Cooker – It’s best to let the freezer meal defrost overnight, then add it to the slow cooker and continue to cook as indicated in the slow cooker instructions on the recipe card.
  • Oven Cooking – Always check the recipe card instructions, but in general for oven cooking this works best for casseroles. Thaw the meal out overnight in the fridge, then cover with foil and cook in the oven per the recipe card instructions.
  • Stovetop – This works well for frozen pork or meats, that have been cooked prior and need to be defrosted.
  • Air Fryer – This is perfect for crispy foods, for instance if you want to made Teriyaki Beef and instead of slow cooker, you want it crispy, it can be cooked in the air fryer after it’s thawed instead.

Freezer Prep Day or Building a Stockpile:

When prepping for freezer meals, it can be done a few different ways with different methods. We did a freezer prep day when we were expecting a baby, we planned out 4 months of freezer meals, purchased all the ingredients, prepped all the meals in about 8 hours, and froze the meals. This stocked our freezer for more than 4 months.

(By the way, this was me when we had an insane situation at our home and part of our ceiling had to be replaced, I was SO THANKFUL I already had dinner ready to go!)

Alternatively, you can also simply make double batches when making dinner and freezer one for later. An example of this is that when we go to Costco and buy roast, typically I end up with 3 roast, that means when I go to make our pot roast, I will add ingredients into a freezer safe storage bag for all 3 roast in separate bags.

Then, I lay them flat in the freezer and freeze them. When I’m ready to make roast, it’s all prepped, I am just defrosting and dumping all the contents in the bag directly in the slow cooker.

Another example of this is that if you are cooking for two, you can freezer half of what you have cooked for instance, if you make chili but have enough for more meals, freeze the leftovers. When ready to serve, defrost and warm it back up in the slow cooker. This is a great way to utilize leftovers without eating the same meal for a week.

Lastly, my favorite option is to do a smaller prep day, my preferred amount of meals is 10 meals, which is what you will see in the Freezer to Slow Cooker Prep Guide. This takes about 4 hours to prep and freeze, then I use those 10 meals throughout the month on days where cooking dinner is is impossible. This is my go-to method!
