Recently, I had the privilege of attending the highly anticipated Kraft Dibs on My Ribs event, an experience that truly ignited my passion for all things barbecue. This gathering was a vibrant celebration of culinary skill, focusing intensely on the art of preparing succulent ribs and the transformative power of a great BBQ sauce or marinade. I’m thrilled to share not just the highlights of my memorable trip, but also an easy-to-follow recipe that brings the essence of that event directly to your kitchen.

An Unforgettable BBQ Experience: The Kraft Dibs on My Ribs Event

While the “Dibs on My Ribs” event was, as the name suggests, heavily focused on pork ribs, it served as a profound testament to the versatility and crucial role of quality BBQ sauces and marinades in elevating any grilled or smoked dish. I joined several fellow bloggers, thanks to Collective Bias, for an insightful and truly enjoyable day. One of the standout moments was meeting a talented contestant from my home state of Oklahoma.

Insights from a BBQ Master: The Power of Quality Sauce

This seasoned Oklahoman chef generously shared a wealth of invaluable cooking tips, delving into the nuances of achieving optimal flavor profiles using various marinades and spice blends. What truly surprised me was her candid admission: despite typically crafting her own BBQ sauces, she had become a genuine convert to Kraft BBQ sauces. Her reason? Their exceptional depth of flavor and consistent deliciousness. After experiencing it firsthand with our smoked turkey legs, I wholeheartedly concur. The robust taste delivered by Kraft BBQ sauces is truly impressive.

During the event, we also had the exciting opportunity to peek into another contestant’s bustling kitchen, witnessing the meticulous preparation of his ribs for the grand competition. The air was thick with the intoxicating scent of smoky goodness – a symphony of flavors in the making. Every participant poured their heart into crafting their signature ribs, all vying for the ultimate prize. The passion and dedication were palpable, making for an truly inspiring atmosphere.

From Inspiration to Innovation: Crafting Homemade Smoked Turkey Legs

All the lively discussions and mouth-watering aromas at the BBQ event left me profoundly inspired to create something exceptional using Kraft BBQ Sauce. My mind immediately turned to smoked turkey legs, a treat I had been craving ever since our state fair a few weeks prior. Unfortunately, we missed the fair this year, leaving a void for those iconic turkey legs. So, I decided on the next best thing: making them at home! And I’m confident in saying that my homemade version tasted even better than the fair’s—though I admit, I might be a little biased by the sheer joy of creating them.

The Allure of Smoked Turkey Legs: A Backyard Tradition

Smoked turkey legs evoke a sense of festive indulgence, often associated with fairs, festivals, and hearty outdoor gatherings. Their robust flavor, combined with a satisfyingly meaty texture, makes them a perennial favorite. Achieving that perfect smoky crust and juicy interior requires a balance of proper seasoning, controlled smoking temperatures, and, of course, the right basting agent. This recipe aims to demystify the process, making it accessible for home cooks while delivering a truly authentic and delicious result.

The Perfect Flavor Combination: Brown Sugar Rub & Hickory Smoke BBQ

To start, I prepared a delectable brown sugar rub, which forms the foundational layer of flavor for the turkey legs. This sweet and savory rub not only tenderizes the meat but also creates a beautiful crust during smoking. After generously coating the legs with this aromatic rub, I applied a liberal amount of Kraft Hickory Smoke BBQ Sauce. This particular flavor was my choice for these Smoked Turkey Legs, and it proved to be an exceptional pairing. The natural wood-smoked taste of the turkey legs was beautifully complemented and deepened by the rich, smoky notes of the Hickory Smoke sauce, resulting in a truly full-bodied flavor experience.

Of course, more BBQ sauce was a necessity! As a firm believer that “more is better” when it comes to barbecue, I made sure to baste the turkey legs again midway through the smoking process. This creates an irresistible sticky glaze that locks in moisture and amplifies the already fantastic flavors.

The synergy between the brown sugar rub and the Hickory Smoke BBQ sauce truly made these turkey legs a culinary triumph. The rich, sweet undertones of the brown sugar rub caramelized beautifully, forming a delightful outer crust, while the bold, smoky flavor of the Kraft sauce penetrated deep into the meat, ensuring every bite was packed with flavor. This combination is a testament to how simple yet powerful ingredients can transform a meal from ordinary to extraordinary.

Whether you’re a seasoned pitmaster or a beginner to the world of smoking, this recipe offers a straightforward path to incredibly delicious results. The key is patience and allowing the smoke and flavors to work their magic. So, fire up your smoker and prepare for a truly rewarding culinary adventure with these amazing Smoked Turkey Legs!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 3 hours
Total Time 3 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Package of Turkey Legs (Ours were 2.5 Lbs, typically 3 large legs)
  • BBQ Sauce (We recommend Kraft Hickory Smoke for authentic flavor)
  • Brown Sugar Rub:
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Paprika
  • 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 Tsp Chili Powder
  • Any Additional Spices you prefer (e.g., a pinch of cayenne for heat or onion powder for extra savory depth)

Instructions

  • Begin by preparing your turkey legs. Ensure they are fully defrosted and patted dry with paper towels. Set them aside along with your chosen BBQ sauce, ready for the next steps.
  • In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, paprika, black pepper, and chili powder. Feel free to add any additional spices you prefer to tailor the flavor to your liking.
  • Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until well combined. This mixture will form your flavorful brown sugar rub.
  • Generously pat the prepared rub all over the defrosted turkey legs. Make sure to cover every inch, pressing the rub into the skin for maximum flavor penetration and a beautiful crust.
  • Next, slather a good, even amount of your preferred Kraft BBQ sauce (we recommend Hickory Smoke) over the seasoned turkey legs. Don’t be shy – a generous coating ensures that sticky, caramelized glaze we all love.
  • At this point, it’s time to smoke the turkey legs. Preheat your smoker to a consistent temperature of approximately 240°F (115°C). Place the turkey legs in the smoker and cook for about 2 to 2.5 hours. Continue smoking until the internal temperature reaches a safe 165°F (74°C) when measured with a meat thermometer in the thickest part of the meat, avoiding the bone. This can take up to 3 hours depending on the size of the legs and your smoker.
  • Approximately halfway through the smoking time (around 1 to 1.5 hours in), brush on an additional layer of BBQ sauce. This step helps build up that delicious glaze and adds another burst of flavor.
  • Once the turkey legs have reached the safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), carefully remove them from the smoker. For extra juiciness and flavor retention, you can loosely wrap them in foil and let them rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring tender and succulent results.
